G16. ELIZABETH FERRY born TREVETT, (BETTY)

Elizabeth Trevett was born about 1783, in Dorset.1

mark of Elizabeth TrevettShe married [G3] John Ferry on the 26th February 1805, at Bothenhampton parish church, after banns; she was living in Bothenhampton at this date. She marked her name in the register.2

Their children were: William (1806–1842), James (1808–1888), Jane Trevett (1810–1830), Joseph (1812–1867), Robert (1815–1884), Samuel (1816 – ?), Charles (1818–1911), [G2] Richard (1821–1884), and Sarah (1825 – after 1871); all were baptised at Burton Bradstock.3

At the end of 1817 John Ferry was paid £1 2s, "his Wife being confin'd & destitute of real [Necessaries?]"; in January 1818 he was paid a further £2, his wife being ill. In February, still being ill, he was given a further £1 3s. In May and June 1821 she was ill again, and overseers paid 3s. and 5s.; she was again paid 3s. in November, and again in April 1822, but the reason isn't stated. She was paid £1 4s. in July 1823. She was ill again in 1824, and her husband was paid 1s. 6d; and in November 1825, for which he was paid 3s.4

On 22 October 1826, "Betty Ferry being Ill", the Burton Bradstock overseers made a payment of 1/-. A further payment of 1/- was made on 19 November, for the same reason. She was twice given 4s. for her daughter, being ill, in February 1830; and again 5s. in February 1835, for her children being ill.5

In 1841 she was living in Southover, Burton Bradstock, Dorset, with her family and sister-in-law.6

On 25 March 1845 the Burton Bradstock churchwardens' accounts included Elizabeth Ferry in a list of parishioners considered to be poor and unable to pay both Poor Rates and Church Rates.7

Elizabeth Ferry died at Burton Bradstock on the 20th July 1849, of dementia certified. Her body was buried at Burton Bradstock on the 23rd.8

1 TNA: HO 107/180/16 f22 p5 (calculated birth year from 1782 to 1786); death certificate (calculated birth year 1783); letters to me from Maurice Ferry, who gave the place of birth as Bothenhampton, and a calculated birth year of 1773; her baptism is not found in the Bothenhampton parish register, however, and Maurice seems to have inferred her birthplace from her description, at her marriage in Bothenhampton, as "of this parish". I now believe Maurice's birth year is based on an incorrect identification with a burial entry in 1823. The 1849 death certificate, identifying the deceased as widow of John Ferry, labourer, gives a calculated birth year of 1783. There is a possible baptism of an Elizabeth Trevett, daughter of Francis and Jane, at Puncknowle on 11 February 1787, but it isn't currently possible to identify this Elizabeth as the one who married in 1805 in Bothenhampton; there is at least one other Elizabeth Trevett marrying within a year of 1805, who could also have been the Elizabeth baptised at Puncknowle. There is perhaps a stronger possibility in the baptism of Elizabeth Trivett, daughter of Robert and Jane Trivett, at Dorchester St Peter on 5 January 1781.

2 banns book; parish register; a Robert Trevett witnessed the marriage—possibly her father, but the Robert Trivett of the Dorchester baptism also had a son Robert, so this could also be her elder brother

Suggestions for further research

The problem here is clearly the identification of the correct birth/baptism and parentage details for [G16] Elizabeth Trevett. I think this will require further research at the Dorset Record Office. I am unlikely to undertake this myself.
