Mrs. Hotham Cadbury An Appreciation Throughout her life, Mrs. Hotham Cadbury sought to serve people. She was well equipped to do this for she had natural gifts of sympathy and understanding, a keen sense of humour and was not easily shocked. In addition she had been trained to teach domestic subjects, which indicated a practical approach to life. Since she was an active and practising member of the Society of Friends, she was always aware of the needs of others. In her work as Divisional Commissioner for the King's Norton Girl Guides she found great satisfaction in furthering such a worthy cause. Another outlet for her practical enthusiasm was her chairmanship of the Y.W.C.A. hostel in Moseley. Other people's misfortunes affected her deeply and she was glad to be able to serve on the Rubery Hill Hospital Management Committee from 1951 till her death. During her long association with the National Council of Women in Birmingham she was able to expand her knowledge of the changing social needs of her native city, especially as chairman of the Citizenship Section. While she was president, the Birmingham Branch celebrated its 70th anniversary. For the past 11 years she had been president of the Fifty Club of King's Norton, a position she graced with her charm and held with her quiet efficiency. No appreciation of Mrs. Cadbury's public achievements or of her personal character would be compete without a tribute to her physical courage. During all the years she was so busy working for others she was afflicted by a progressive and painful disability, which she bore with patience and dignity. By her example she has illumined the path of duty for her friends, and fortified her daughter and three sons. L.F. |
