LIEUT. CHRISTOPHER BINNS, R.G.A. This gallant officer was the son of our townsman Mr J.J. Binns, of Bainbridge Holme, and gave up much to come from Natal, where he lived, to fight for the Mother Country. He had only been two days at the front when he unfortunately fell in action. The following extracts from a Natal newspaper will be read withy sympathetic interest by the many friends of the family. The "Natal Mercury" writes: On Tuesday morning a cable message was received announcing that Mr Chris. Binns, solicitor, of Field Street, had been killed in action in France. He left Durban in November, 1916, and at once went into training in a cadet school near Exeter. Thence he was passed on to Shoeburyness, and on July 11th last gazetted as having received a commission in a 60-pound battery, R.G.A. Only last Saturday a letter was received from him in which he stated that he expected to be sent across to France almost at once, so that he must have come to his death very quickly after having taken up duty in France. His intimates know that had he chosen to do so he could have claimed to wear an exemption badge. He was actually informed that he was not medically fit, and that to make him so he would have to undergo an expensive operation, and a tedious sojourn in hospital. He had made up his mind to go, however, and at once proceeded to put himself in the hands of Dr S.G. Campbell, at the Berea Nursing Home. He went on active service from a sheer sense of duty and gave up his practice, which was an increasing one. Writing from the Cadet (Artillery) School, he described the very strenuous training and said, "I am a bit old for this job (he was 35)it is like being at boarding school, with much severer discipline," but he was determined to go through with it, and stuck steadily to the course of training. He had made many sincere friends in Durban, to whom the news that Chris. Binns has fallen will come as a sad blow. His father, who is still alive in England, is a brother of the late Sir Henry Binns. An Appreciation. The news of the death of Chris. Binns has come as a sad blow to his numerous friends in Durban. His cheery ways, his sympathetic nature, his keen sporting instincts, and general genial disposition are special marks by which we all knew him, and his inner good nature was always a store on which to draw by his intimate friends. He was one who always had a ready response to anyone in trouble, and gifted with an exceptionally level head, his advice both in his profession and socially was always sound. Nevertheless he was modest and never offered his advice unless it was sought. In short, he was one of the finest type of the nation's young manhood, and socially and professionally his loss to Durban is severe. Without an enemy in the world, he passes into a life where his nature will have fuller play, and where peace should be his if anyone's. All the Durban Courts adjourned for an hour yesterday, after the news had been received of the death in action of Lieut. Chris. Binns, R.G.A., a cousin of Mr Percy Binns, K.C., the Chief Magistrate. Speaking in the Chief Magistrate's Court on behalf of the Bar, when Mr Binns took his seat, Mr Mackeurtan expressed the sorrow and sense of loss felt at the death of Lieut. Binns, and officer who, in civil life, was beloved by those with whom he came into contact for his many endearing qualities. He conveyed the sympathy of the Bar to the relatives of the late Lieut. Binns. The Chief Magistrate, who was deeply moved, returned thanks for what had been said, and remarked that Lieut. Binns went from Durban to the front imbued with a high sense of duty. Just after Mr Walker Wilson had taken his seat in the First Criminal Court, he intimated that word had been received of the death of Lieut. Binns in Flanders. He said that he was sure that all would hear the news with very deep regret. He was a man who was held in the highest esteem by all who had come into contact with him at the Courts, and as a mark of respect he adjourned the Court till 11 o'clock. Mr Eugene Renaud, on behalf of the Bar, spoke in high terms of the late Mr Binns, and said that their sorrow was mitigated by the knowledge that he had died on the field of Flanders. Mr Oxley Oxland referred in sympathetic terms to the death of Mr Binns in the Borough and District Court, and as a mark of respect for the deceased adjourned the Court till 11 o'clock. A similar adjournment was made in the Second Civil Court by Mr A.T. Roberts, who announced the sad news in that Court. |
